Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard confirmed Tuesday she turned down an offer from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his running mate, even as she signaled her willingness to serve in the position under former President Donald Trump.

'I met with Kennedy several times, and we have become good friends,' she said in a statement to ABC News. 'He asked if I would be his running mate. After careful consideration, I respectfully declined.'

Gabbard, a former Democratic Congresswoman for the state of Hawaii, piqued Kennedy's interest after she left the Democratic party in 2022 calling it an 'elitist cabal of warmongers.'

Kennedy ultimately selected millionaire lawyer Nichole Shanahan as his running mate, after considering other prospects such as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, and former Democratic candidate for president Andrew Yang.
