Beto O’Rourke entered the Presidential contest too much fanfare.
But O’Rourke struggled to maintain his status as the liberal media darling as other candidates emerged.
And now this ugly secret from Beto O’Rourke’s past just drove the final nail in his campaign’s coffin.
Republicans hammered O’Rourke during his 2018 challenge to Texas Senator Ted Cruz for a 1998 drunk driving arrest.
The police report claimed O’Rourke fled the scene of an accident he caused while allegedly driving his vehicle impaired.
O’Rourke vehemently denied that allegation.
But now the truth is out.
The officers that signed the report say it’s accurate and they contend O’Rourke did indeed flee the scene of the accident that allegedly resulted from driving under the influence.
The Texas Tribune reports:
O’Rourke admits he was intoxicated and says there is no justification for his actions, but he has denied that he tried to flee.
"Beto's DWI is something he has long publicly and openly addressed over the last 20 years at town halls, on the debate stage, during interviews, and in Op-Eds, calling it a serious mistake for which there is no excuse," said O'Rourke spokesman Chris Evans. "This has been widely and repeatedly reported on."
Neither the investigating officer, Richard Carrera, nor his former supervisor, Gary Hargrove, specifically recalls the events of that night more than 20 years ago. But both of the former Anthony Police Department officers told The Texas Tribune they have no doubt the report they compiled and signed is accurate.
O’Rourke made a splash in his first 24 hours as a candidate raising over six million dollars in just 24 hours.
But it has been all downhill from there.
His poll numbers flattened out in the low to mid single digits as South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg became the new media darling.
Now this story will consume any remaining media oxygen O’Rourke hoped to generate for the time being.
That has some political observers beginning to write Beto’s political obituary.
