Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday federal law enforcement officers “will not be welcome” in New York—echoing outrage from other Democratic leaders of cities where President Trump has threatened to send U.S. law enforcement personnel.

De Blasio wrote a letter to Attorney General William Barr and Department of Homeland Security Acting Secretary Chad Wolf on Wednesday.

The letter describes the presence of federal agents in Portland, Oregon, as “deeply troubling” and rejects the president’s claims that New York needs similar intervention.

“It is clear that the president’s proposed actions threaten the safety of New Yorkers, the rights of New Yorkers and the fundamental principles of our nation’s constitution,” wrote de Blasio, whose dismissal of the need for extra help has been reinforced by Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.
