A new report has highlighted that the number of young Americans identifying as transgender or queer has declined rapidly in recent years. The report from the Centre for Heterodox Social Science, written by Eric Kaufmann, looked at data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) as well as surveys from elite institutions across the US.

The FIRE survey, which polled over 60,000 students in 2025, found that just 3.6 percent of US undergraduates identified as a gender that is neither male nor female. This is down from 5.2 percent in 2024, and 6.8 percent in 2023.

"In other words, the share of trans-identified students has effectively halved in just two years," Kaufmann wrote for UnHeard.
